Show Mid School Notes by Margery Hadden The end of the 3rd quarter is drawing near and fifth graders are busy turning in book reports plus projects, extra credit for science, and social study reports. In science class we are studying plants and are busy with many experiments and observations. From dissecting seeds and flowers, growing potatoes, planting plant-ing mystery seeds, to constructing construct-ing terrariums our window sills are full of new green plant matter. We take daily observations observa-tions of all growing projects and learn a lot about plants by doing. Reading class had a special result last week. One reading group in particular read a story about a little girl who discovered the Mitchell's Comet. Well, through a class discussion, it was discovered that one of our parents had a real interest in astronomy. So, we immediately contacted her and asked for a visit and some information on the sky. Last Thursday, Mrs. Black (Michelle's Mom) arrived laden with books, posters, and a real telescope. One hour and 15 minutes later we had a new knowledge about the science of astronomy and a real excitement about star watching. In fact, the next day we started a whole new bulletin board about the sky. We spent every extra minute looking through all the books Mrs. Black left and there were at least 10 letters written to NASA (National Aeronautics and Space Administration). Adminis-tration). Allison Goodworth, who had already developed an interest, inter-est, brought in a poster and news bulletins about recent space flights. Several students reported that they were out watching the stars and had seen several constellations that Mrs. Black had pointed out. We would like to thank Mrs. Black for her superb lecture that envoked real enthusiasm enthus-iasm in the fifth grade. Well, that's all the news for now; but we will keep you posted. |
