Show EDITORIAL Get Behind Main Street The Park City Council will tonight consider granting their endorsement to placing the Main Street area on the National Register of Historic Places. Unlike the nomination of specific buildings to the National Register, this action would recognize the heart of the town of Park City, including many buildings and many property owners. The prospect may cause some concern that restrictions will be placed on merchants within the district, but from all ava:lable information we feel these fears should be put to rest. Rather than placing restrictions, the designation would make property owners eligible for tax breaks and encourage a much-needed sprucing up of Main Street buildings. Philosophically , all of Park City's citizens should support national recognition of the history we live with on a day to day basis. The problem of encouraging development and civic improvements in the downtown area has generated much discussion but little action in recent years. The council now has an opportunity to encourage a positive step by doing nothing more frightening or ambitious than giving their blessing. We hope their endorsement of Main Street's placement on the National Register is given with strong support. It is not an opportunity available to many towns in this country. |
