Show SUTHERLAND AT GOVERNORS' MEET Salt 1-ake. Aug. IS. At the conference confer-ence of governors of western states to discuss matters pertaining to tho national conservation congress at SL Paul, next month, tho following states wero represented by their chief executives: ex-ecutives: Washington, Idaho, Wyoming Wyom-ing and Utah. Oregon was represented represent-ed by C, N. McArthur; California, by Congressman Julius Kahn; Nevada, by A R. Wicher, and Colorado, by J. F. Calbreath Montana was nonrepresented but a letter was received from Governor Norrls regretting his Inability to attend at-tend and expressing his sentiment In favor of the conference. Gov. Spry of Utah was chosen chairman of the conference. After which Gov. Hay of Washington made an address in which he said that he was Instrumental in calling the convention through an apprehension ap-prehension that at tho coming national nation-al convention at SL Paul the Western West-ern states would not receive the consideration con-sideration due them. He denied that there was any politics in his action that It was purely on bis own Initiative Initia-tive and was not In the Interest of any party to the controversy regarding the conservation of natural resources. His state was vitally interested In the matter as 27 and 1-i per cent of Its area wa Included In national reserves which, in his Judgment, should be conserved con-served by the state Instead of tho nation. na-tion. Cow Brooks of Wyoming followed saying that there wero two questions before tho conference. First, whether-er whether-er tho western states should be represented rep-resented at the national confrence, and, scond, whether the policies were favorable to the west. A common line of action should bo agree, on. he said Gov. Brady of Idaho endorsed what Governor Brooks said, no believed the west would win out in its fight If their claims could be properly presented pre-sented to the eastern delegates. He was convinced and they were convinced con-vinced that tlip stateB would not waste their resources. Senator Sutherland of Utah also addressed tho meeting. baylng he thought it would be unwise If tho west was not fully represented at St. Paul Tho conservation question, he said, was becoming a political one and must bo fought out In congress. At this point bn meeting adjourn ed for luncheon, the governors being the guests of the Commercial club. |
