Hell, tho Federation of Miners has just commenced to fight," declared John Mclennan, president of the Col- , orado State Federation of Labor, In . welcoming the delegates to the annual an-nual convention of the Western Fed- ! oration of Miners, which opened here ' today. j McLennan predicted an unrelenting . war by capital against labor unions and declared he could hear "mutter- ! Ings of tho coming storm which labor j could not afford to Ignore." ' He warned the delegates against Internal discussion and declared the Western Federation of Miners would ; never hol6t the flag of surrender. j Today's session was devoted to ad- 1 dress of welcome and the appoint- ! ment of a committee on credentials. ' President Delivers Report Tcday. ' President CharleH H. Moyer outlined out-lined his annual report, which will be delivered tomorrow to tho Associated Asso-ciated Press. He stated he will recommend rec-ommend tho appointment by the con- I vention of a committee of seven to assist in organizing a labor union party in Arizona and New Mexico. An ; effort will be made to secure control of the constitutional conventions and ; force the adoption of measures favor- j able to unions In the constitutions. j Moyer said that if the committee i is authorized and he is given power to appoint its members, Joe Connon, member of the executive committee of the Federation from Arizona, would bo named as chairman j Moyer is sanguine of success In Arizona becnuse of the strength of labor unions in that territory. He is moro dubious about New Mexico but j hoes to divide the constitutional I convention so that tbe labor delegates will hold the balance of power. Will Dsmand Rights. The Federation will demand that tho constitutions of Arizona and New Mexico refuse power to district courts to grant injunctions against labor unions. Moyer's report will reecrmmend the bringing of a suit in South Dakota to determine the legality of the card syt.tem by which a miner Is compelled to sign an agreoment never to affllate with a ! labor union before he can eecurc work j In the Deadwood district. Moyer will also attack the law creating cre-ating a bureau of mines, declaring that the measure was so amended in the senate, at the instigation of thi rmelter Interests, as to except Alaska Alas-ka from control of the bureau. Moyer declares the Federation h88 a paid up membership of 62,000 and a membership at 74.000, whose dues are less than three months in arrears |
