Show AN ARMY OF CRIMINALS. Officer Shumaker of the local Harriman railroad yards, in an interview in The' Standard, made surprising disclosures as to the army, of criminal and petty thieves which trespasses on railroad property. He declared that the night watchmen in the yards are con- i stantly at war with the most desperate characters and that if the officers were to relax their vigilance or fail to display a bold front, railroad property would be sacrificed and the lives of the officers themselves placed in great jeopardy. In commenting on the lawlessness of the drifting tide of humanity hu-manity in the yards, Officer Shumaker referred to the holdups occurring oc-curring on the viaduct, report of which is never made. Agent Chevers of the Harriman roads says this must not be interpreted to mean that the Ogden police force is not vigilant or in sympathy with the railroad people in their struggle to keep down the criminal crim-inal element in the yards, but to the contrary and he says this with emphasis the railroad authorities hold the local police force fax high esteem and have never called on the men without receiving a quick and an efficient response. The trouble is there ia a limited force of officers for the large territory which is to be policed, and that is one reason the officers in the yards are sometimes compelled to resort to drastio measures to keep in check the criminal invaders of railroad property. |
