Show THE CORN CROP CAN BE DOUBLED Washington, Dec. 16. That it Is only a matter of a few years before. It will be possible to double the present pres-ent average production of corn per aero in tho United States, is the belief be-lief of C. P. Hartley, pbyslcologl3t In charge of the corn Investigations of the bureau of plant Industry, set forth in a pamphlet ls?ued by the department de-partment of agriculture. And this may be accomplished without increasing increas-ing the work or expense, says Mr, Hartley. Mr. Hartley suggests three ways by which farmers would be able practically prac-tically to d"3ble the present production produc-tion per acre. These arc: First, Improvement in the qualHy of seed plant; second, Improvement in the condition of the soli, and third, improvement In the method of cultivation. Mr. Hartley says that It should not be understood "from this statement that it Is desirablo to double the present corn crop, but that It Is de; slrablc to produce the same yield ou. a smaller number of acres and with less labor. The expert says that tho average crop lit the utatca. best cdaptcd to corn growing Is but llttlo above tho general average of the entire country. This, he says, clearly Indicates thi possibility of greatly Increasing the yield per acre In tho corn belt, Thla Is especially easy of accomplishment in tho Southern states, where thej present production per aero Is low and where the growing i-eason Is not shortened by frosts. |
