REASON FOR HIGH COST OF LIVING. Part of the high cost of living, in many families where they keep servants, is due to the constant disappearance of supplies by way of the back door. Not all servants will levy toll on the mistress' larder but we are "all poor critters," and certainly the servants have examples enough. The government employe can nearly always be told by the rubber bands he has in his pocket. A certain amount of grafting is considered all right. There was nothing so very startling, star-tling, therefore, when a woman in New York the other night, going home from work in a restaurant, was found to be literally padded with eatables. A porterhouse steak in each stocking and a dozen hard boiled eggs concealed in Her hat, were part of the booty discovered discov-ered by the police. She went on the principle, she pleaded, that "the Lord helps those that help themselves." How many of us are there, after all, that do not do just a little pilfering of one sort or another now and then? We might not steal eggs, for that is vulgar and small, but we might not be able to resist temptations coming in more polite and conventional guise.
