Show j Complete Tie Up of the Northern Railroad by Employes Paris. Oct. 11. The employes of the Northern railroad wont on strike early ear-ly today, and by 11 o'clock this morning, morn-ing, the tie-up of the system .was practically complete .t that hour trains only for Calais and Cologne were moving. Military engineer.? have been railed to replace the strikers but the number is Inadequate. Several acts of violence oecurred before da) break. At St. Quentln the tracks were torn up. The locomotives collided at Tnrginer and obstructed the main track. Military torccs have tken possession or several stati ns and have been posted along the road The strike developed over night, and took the company and tho public by surprise. Tlure has been ill feeling on the part of the employes for some time, owing to the refusal of the Northern railroad lo Increase the wages of the men to a minimum of $1 per day and V grant other concessions. There have been rumors of an Impending strike, but the men conducted their plans with great secrecy and not until last evening was it realized that the flcht probably would be on today. The demands originated with th under trainmen, the baggage handlers and ticket takers, but they were supported sup-ported by the complete personnel, ns every branch of the service has some grievance. The strikers threaten to draw to their support the emploies of the state railroad lines. Work ceased on the freight trains at lirst and none left the city last night. Farly in the night telegraphic and telephonic communication along Ihe road was interrupted and thus the management was In ignorance oi what trains were moving. The postal department hurriedly prepared un automobile service to carry the malls in the north. No trains left this city between mMnlght and 5 o'clock. At daybreak this city was severely nfttctcd. In ihe forenoon, all stations on the Northern road were taken possession of bv the troops and the police. No disturbances were reported Most of the men who continue working work-ing this forenoon hail from the provinces prov-inces and simply took too opportunity lo return home on thejr trains before joining the strike. |
