R. E. Taylor a first-class firoman, was the first of the Injured to succumb suc-cumb to the terrible burns sustained In the scalding steam and rush of fur-nnco fur-nnco flames before tho meu oln tho boiler room of the Hopkins could rnako their escape. He died tonight after eleven hours of great agony. Almost all of Taylor's clothing was burned from his body, while his arm, j legs and chest were literally cooked. L. R. Carlctllo, a second-clasB fireman, fire-man, is nearly as badly burned as was Taylor and his recovery Is doubt-ful. doubt-ful. At tho time that the accident occurred oc-curred the Hopkins was at the pier on the Coronado side of the bay and wan getting up steam for a run to San Pedro. There wero but eight men In the forward engine room when tho tube slipped and the heated steam rushed hissing from the dislodged end. Six of tho men scrambled up tho ladder to tho deck, giving the alarm. |
