Show CONDEMNED THE BAD FRUIT j "The shipment of unwholesome straw berries and tomatoes from Mexico Mex-ico and California to the Ogden market mar-ket this week has ciused the city officials, of-ficials, the retail dealers and tho commission com-mission men to become Indignant, even to the point of calling the officers of-ficers of tho state pure food do-part-ment to condemn the product. Last Tuesday it was reported to the city officials that parties were selling tomatoes by the wugon load In the southern part of thtr'crty" that were "dimply rotten." The matter was hurriedly hur-riedly taken up and the tomatoes were called to an accounting. It was tplafn thot tho fruit was bad, exceptionally bod, and the commission men. .1. R. Brown and H. L. Griffin, Immediately got busy, as did J. S. Carver. Tho gentlemen were Indignant, and thoy Immediately called the attention of pure food department of the state to the matter. ' Deputy Inspector J. E. Johnson was dispatched to Ogden and he made an immediate Investigation The result was that he found that not only bad tomatoes had been shipped to the 0-den 0-den market, but that there were numerous nu-merous cases of strawberries, not fit for food, being sold to tbo people The tomatoes and the strawberries were condemned and taken from tho market places. Mr. Johnson 6tated that he thought the tomatoes that were being sold hero were from a car that had been condemned con-demned In Salt Lake last week. At rny rate there was a thorough shaking shak-ing up In the fruit stands and grocery gro-cery stores. The city was soon cleared of tho bad fruit and J. S. Carver was authorized to watch the express offices anl stores to seo to It that no moro such fru't be sold to the people. Mr. Carver states that tho fruit for fele In the city today Is In good condition con-dition and that there Is no likelihood of more b;ul fruit gottlng pa6t tho dealers. The wholesale dealers state that the condition of the fruit had escaped es-caped their attention, and that its bad condition was due to negligence of the shippers. They were anxious to state officials so as to protect them against loss. The shippers will have to Ktand good for all fruit condemnad by the state |
