Show NOVEL METHOD FOR SMUGGLING GOODS New York, March 25. Customs house officers believe they have discovered dis-covered a novel method for smuggling goods ashore It Is charged that a trunk, containing goods valued at $5,-000, $5,-000, was swung ashore from the American Amer-ican liner Philadelphia recently by means of a wire and pulley. By this method, a trunk or box might be hoisted hoist-ed quietly from a vessel and carried aWip the wire to an adjoining pier I where there was no boat, and consequently conse-quently no customs inspectors. How often this scheme has been worked is a matter of conjecture. Robert Rob-ert Swartz, baggagemaster of tho American line, was arrested and another an-other employe of the company was detained de-tained aa a witness. Both men are locked up in the Tombs. |
