Show BOOKMAKING AND POOL SELLING MAY BE WIPED OUT Sacramento, Cal., Jan. 3. That United States Senator George C. Perkins Per-kins will be re-elected by the California Califor-nia state legislature, which convenes next Tuesday, Is considered practically certain by the members of both houses who have already arrived at the state capltol. While the Democrats increased in-creased their membership somewhat In the November election and In their opposition op-position to Perkins will be supported by a few Independent Republicans, the regular Republican organization forces have an overwhelming majority in both branches of the legislature. The effort that will be made by the legislature to wipe out the race tracks in California, so far as bookmaklng and pool selling is concerned, looms up on tbe horizon as the bitterest and hardest fight of the session. Both antl gambling ' forces, 'and tho friends of the "Sport of Kings." are early on the ground, lobbying for and against tho proposed measures. Among the more important legislation legisla-tion this session will be the enactment of a direct primary law as authorized by the recent general elections; tho passing of several banking measures, providing for a safer and better banking bank-ing system in the state. |
