Show TElfTEP TO GO MK TOJHNG Feels Supremely Confident That He Could Agaiu Win With the Gloves. Denver, Jan. 3. Apparently James J. Corbott is sincere In his announced desire to re-enter the prize ring and endeavor to bring back to a white man the world's heavyweight championship cham-pionship won by Jack Johnson, tho Galveston colored fighter. Glvon six months in which to train and conlltion himself properly for such a contest, he said today that he felt supremely confident he could win. So It is more than probable, should the Australian fight promoters, failing to coax big Jim Jeffries back into the arena to meet Johnson, take Corbetls talk seriously and offer a championship purse for a championship flght. Corbett. one of the cfpvpre?t men who ever put on a glove, would again be seen In the ring. Corbfii is now 42 years eld, but it muBt be said of him that he appears to be in perfect physical condition. Since the evening of August 14, 1902, when Jeffries knocked him out In ten rounds, Corbett has had on a buxlng glove but once. "But I've always kept up my exercise," exer-cise," said Corbett to an Associated Tress reporter today, "and physically I know I am In better condition than Jeffries or any of the othera outside of these young fellowt-, who wouldn't have a chance on earth anyway with Johnson." "Honestly, though," continued Corbett, Cor-bett, "I didn't mean to start this talk of my going up against Johnson. I simply feel badly to see a colored man champion, and I told a bunch of friends one evening how I felt and that I did not know of any man who had a better chanco with Johnson than myself, un less it should bo Jeffries. I don'Lyant to bo put in the position of apparently Issuing a challenge to fight Johnson. I don't intend to do anything of tho kind. I talked too much because I felt so badly over the Australian fight. But if the Australian people should happen to like the idea and give mo six months in which to train, why. I'll go into tho game again, and I think I could make good and get the championship champion-ship back." Corbett has done nothing toward cancelling his theatrical engagements and will not unless, some action Is taken at the other end. He said, however, how-ever, that he Intended to do some active ac-tive training at the Denver Athletic club next week, and so far as possible, would condition himself while on the road for the rest of the season. Corbett said his weight had not changed much In several years and that ho could probably enter the ring weighing about 185 pounds, stripped. |
