Promptly at noon today, Vice President Sherman Sher-man called the senate to order and after Chaplain Hale had delivered an Impressive invocation, tho roll was called and a committee appointed to call upon the President and notiry him that the senate was organized and ready for business. The session attracted a large gathering gath-ering and much Interest was centered upon the new senators. The "Cherokee "Chero-kee strip," as a part of the Democratic Demo-cratic side on the extreme right hand of the vice-president is known, was rendered interesting by the location there of Senator Root, among the new (senators. It is in this portion of tho senate that arc located the "insurgents," "insur-gents," the new Republican senators who are not altogether pleased with their committee assignments, and who are inclined in retaliation at times to revolt from the policies of the majority. ma-jority. Senatorfelect Smith, of Maryland, and Chamberlain, of Oregon, both of whom were prevented from reaching the senate in time to be sworn in yesterday, yes-terday, took the oath of office. Senator Penrose stated that his colleague, col-league, Senator Knox, had sent his resignation as United States senator to the governor of Pennsylvania, and asked that his name be stricken from the roll of the sixty-first congress, it having Just been called by the clerk. The vice-president ordered that this should be done. On motion of Mr. Hale, the senate took a recess until 1:30 p. m. to permit per-mit the notification committee to perform per-form its duties. |
