Last Friday night, at about 11 o'clock, J. C. Jensen, of the Heal? Cale, L H. Becraft and a couple ot visiting friends passed through rather a humiliating, and what they term an unwarranted experience. They had been visiting in Salt Lake during tlio afternoon and evening, departing from the city In ;n automobile at about 11 o'clock. The roads were very muddy and it ic-quired about all the power cf the machine to drive it even at a moderate rate of speed. As they were passing through tho lit tie town of Farmlngton. the officious offici-ous constable accosted them and placed them under arrest, ot the tlm? charging them with exceeding tr-c speed limit. He insisted that the gen- tl men each put up bail In the sum ot ?o0. To this exaction the gentlemen demurred and demanded a hearing. A deputy sheriff was summoned and the two officers, with the aid of the Og den gentlemen, succeeded in rousing j the city justice of the peace. ! They repaired to a little room in the rear of one of the main public iiiUdlngs. where a sort of hearli ? wj;p held. The. evidence, according, to the Ogden men., proved quite couclu si-cly that the speed limit could noi rof.slbly have . been exceeded in tho darkness of the night,. and over such roads as prevailed that night, but t.cvertheless, the justiee of the peace found them guilty of the offense and pronounced a fine of ?10 each. The fne was paid rather reluctant lj, but the gentlemen are of the opinion that thty will not again suffer such misapplication misap-plication of the law without a strenuous strenu-ous fight In the courts. |
