Show TESTS BRE1AN MONORAIL CAR GYROSCOPES PERFECTLY BALANCE BAL-ANCE THE MODEL. Car Is Run on Copper Cable and Center Cen-ter of Gravity Is Three Inches Above Point of Contaot. New York. March 8. Dr. Alexander Chcs6in, of Washington university, St. Louis, gave a demonstration of tho principle of the Bronnan Monorail car in the physical laboratory at Columbia Colum-bia university yesterday. The model car has all the essential features of the large car, to perfect which tho British government has appropriated $500,000. The two opposed gyroscopes which give Uie car its remarkable pow-ers pow-ers of balance are four inches in diameter di-ameter and are made of solid steel. While the gyroscopes revolved after af-ter having been set In motion at an initial speed of 3,000 revolutions per minute, Dr. Chessln placed the car on a copper cable stretched across the' room, and although the, center ot gravity was three inches above the point of 'contact, the car maintained Its balance perfectly. It successfully balanced ' more than ten pounds and did not Up until almost twothlrds of the entire car's weight was attached to one side. It is Dr Chessia's opinion that the Brennan has great commercial possibilities, possi-bilities, and he suggests that a test be made on the New York subway. |
