Hans Wiggins was arraigned In police po-lice court on the charge of petit larceny, lar-ceny, having stolen, It was charged, a ouantlty of galvanl7.ed pipe from tha rear of Alvord's second-hand stori on Grant avenue, and re-selllng It to the accommodating proprietor at his front door. Hans hesitated to plead, but finally made It "guilty," adding that he dirt not know that the pipe belonged to Alvord. Ofllcer Chambers stated that Hans had been released from serving a sentence for petit larceny only thl day before, and had apparently made a short cut to the rear of Alvord's store v herc he recalled the location of a quantity of galvanized pipe. Taking a number of lengths of the pipe around to the front of the store, Hans bargained with the wlley proprietor pro-prietor and even negotiated the sale of an additional supply to be delivered later. Believing that time and pipe were money and that the balance of tho pipe lay unprotected from other possible pos-sible discoverers, Hans hastened back to the rear after the rest. In the meantime a clerk had suggested to Alvord that he was probably buying his own pipe. Tho result of an Investigation In-vestigation was the calling of an officer offi-cer wholnterrupted Hans at his labors la-bors and arrested him. The court was visibly affected by the narrative and, believing that a genius like Hans should be rewarded In some small way, extended an Invitation In-vitation to remain a guest of Jailor Anderson for the next fortnight. |
