Show NEW LIGHT. REGARDING . MRS. CLAUDIA HAINS. Flushing, N. Y., Jan. 5. New light was thrown on the relation of William Wil-liam E. Annis and Mrs. CHwuia Hains in the trial of Thornton .i. Haln3 today, to-day, when the defendant, under ot-amlnatiou, ot-amlnatiou, declared that several years ago, in Marblehead, Mass., he became aware that Annia and Mrs. Halns had slopped at tho same hotel. Questioned Ques-tioned by Justice Crane, Thornton Hain6 said ho never spoke of the relations re-lations between Mrs. Hains and Annis An-nis to Captain Hains, and had re-mninod re-mninod silent on the matter until last spring. The fabric of the' "case of the defense de-fense was badly torn today when Thornton Hains, under rharp cross-examination cross-examination by the state's attorney, made many damaging admissions. His Jnunty manner quickly disappeared in the lire of the prosecutor's interrogations, inter-rogations, and several times he admitted ad-mitted that ho could not remember the minor details of the same testimony testi-mony he had given yesterday. Once, in plaintive voice, Hains 6ald: "I can't remember; 1 never wag so tired in my life. I have been flvo months in prison and I am worn out." |
