Chicago, now makes it possible for the state of Indiana to proceed Immediately Im-mediately with the construction of the section. Part of the cost of construction w'.ll be borne by ndl'ana, part by the fed-j ral government, and three-iuarters by the Lincoln Highway association Fund.s have been contibuted by the I'nlted States Rubber company to cover the association's 9hare Plans for the section have been prepared pre-pared by a technical committee com-posed com-posed of the lending highway engi-neers engi-neers of the I "nlted S'ate9. The site was selected with grt-at care, and was purposely placed near one of thej great centers of population In order that it might easily bo reachod by officials and engineers desiring to make a study of Its construction. Lengthy negotiations wero necessary neces-sary with the companies controlling the wires along the site selected; with the proptrty owners where the greater right-of-way was required and with county, state and federal authorities: I The participation In the work by the county, state and federal government required that the plans be passed upon up-on by the tngineers of each of these units. TIih plans approved by the U. S. bureau of public roads insure the construction of the finest stretch of road In the United States The plans call for 40 feet of reinforced concrete paving, 10 inches thick, laid in thta paving. 10 inches thick, laid In the center of 100-foot right-of-way. Provision has been made for the widening of tho right-of-way to 125 feet, by options on tho abutting property, prop-erty, which ran brs exercised latf-r if desired. The grade will be drainel without ditches, th" roadway will lie adequately and ideally illuminated for night traffic; all overhead wires will he removed from the right-of-way, which will be beautified and landscaped. The design contemplates a traffic within the life of the Improvement equivalent to 20,000 vehicles per 24-hour 24-hour day and the paving width will earn,- this traffic without danger and with facility. The .state of Indiana has already let contracts for the pavement of tho Lincoln Highway leading to each end of the ideal section. It is expected that the section will be about ono mile nnd a half In length sufficient. It Is believed by the officials of the1 Lincoln Highwaj association, to dem-; onslrate the road leason conveyed by the specifications and the gaiur.il plans. The utmost care will be usid in th-J construction of the section, the work being under tho constant Inspection I of the Lincoln Highway association's engineers and th highway engineers of the state of Indiana and Lake I county, as well as the district engineer engi-neer of the federal government. Only the moBt approved modern practices will be followed In tho handling, mixing mix-ing and laying of tho aggregates. Highway engineers nnd public officials offi-cials in every section of the country j will follow this work with the utmost i interest.
