I Tho sheriff of Baker county appealed today to Duval county authorities for help In coping with a situation at MacClenny, 30 miles west of here. Which he asid threatens to develop into in-to civil warfare. as the culmination of I ,the shooting there this morning of Jake Wilkinson, the kidnaping last, ; week of a man named Roblnosn and the recent mysterioius disappearance of T R. Henderson, former banker and wealthy naval stores operator. me c itizen of MacClenny stated over the telephone shortly after 1 o'clock that "hell will break loose here tonight" to-night" and that he was preparing to move his wife and children. over-nor over-nor Hardee at Tallahassee, said he had heard nothing from the Baker county authorities, but If iroops were. required he was prepared to act Immediately. Im-mediately. Reports from UcClenny were that the trouble apparently was an outbreak out-break of a feud which has existed between be-tween two pioneer Baker county families fam-ilies for -0 years. Henderson disappeared disap-peared ten days ago and a reward of $lu0 offered by his wife for the discovery dis-covery of his body, If he Is dead, caused a thorough search to be made within a wide radius of MacClenny-His MacClenny-His automobile was found in the bottom bot-tom of St. Mary's river, which forms .the Florida. Georgia boundary", and since that time searching parties have dragged the river In the hope that his body might be recovered. MacClenny was shot up and two stores dynamited one night several I months ago. but because of the sc-Icretiveness sc-Icretiveness of the Inhabitants, news 'of the occurrence did not reach the outside world for several, days. although al-though one of the main lines of the ! On that occasion the shooting was attributed to persons not in sympathy sym-pathy with the avowed Intention of the newly elected sheriff to break up moonshine liquor manufacturing and j bootlegging in the county. One of the stores dynamited was operated by a relative of the sheriff, 'who had been outspoken in his ap-.proval ap-.proval of tho sheriff's contemplated campaign. The county has been the scene of 'several lynchlngs and numerous i shooting affairs within the last few years. The population Is about 300 i persons. oo |
