Show oo JOIE RAY BREAKS 3000-METER RECORD NEW YORK. Feb. 18. Joio Ray, ; star middle distance runner of the Illinois A. C, tonight broke the I world's indoor record for 8000 meters me-ters by running the dlfetance In 8 minutes min-utes 31 !-5 seconds at the annual games of the Wllco Athletic association associ-ation In Brooklyn. The old record, 8 minutes and 35 seconds, was made bj George Ronhag at the same games orf Deecmber HJ. 1911. John ' Blondy" Romi;: oT Penn State, was second; Earl Johnson, negro ne-gro star of Pittsburg, was third, and Walter Hlggins of Columbia university was fourth. Ray took tho lead at the start and I was never headed, crossing tho finish line approximately 50 yards ahead of Komlg. Johnson was about the same .distance behind Romlg and Hlgglns was nearly lapped by the fleet Chl- j cagoan. Ray's lime at the quarter-mile sta-i sta-i lions was as follows: 66 1-5 seconds; 2 minutes. 15 2-5 seconds; 3 minutes 24 1-5 seconds; 4 i minute 32 3-6 seconds; 5 minute 42 3-6 seconds; six minutes. 53 3-5 seconds. 8 minutes, 4 2-5 seconds; and the finish was 8 minutes 31 2-5 seconds. sec-onds.
