Show 1 GOLF 'JOSHER ! ' I"- Firing Back With Their W Own Guns Is One Way IT to Fix 'em ,g BY BILLY EVAN3. W What place has (he "Josher" In golf? B- That is a rather difficult question to determine. R? Thero are some players ho don't E- take the game seriously Joshinc with bv Hi em Is part of the game. E- That is all very well if their oppo- k nent Is that typo of player. It mar pa6a m muster in a foursome if all the players K- are of the same turn of mind. ft.' It must be remembered, however, v that "Joshing" in golf, which 1b a rath- , er polite way of saying getting one's W. "goat," Is not conducive to helping the W play and score of the golfer. M? OFTEN DISGUSTING. It There is nothing quite so disgust- K. lng to the player of a serious turn of Si. mind as to get paired up with some W: player who uses his tongue to perhaps E, . a greater advantage than his clubs. In I bringing about his opponent's down fall I Golf is supposed to be a gentleman's I game While It would be unkind to say L the "josher" was not d gentleman, still !k such method3 are not supposed to con E' form to the etiquette of the game. W In playing golf one encounters all j sorts of conditions and the good golt- E I er meets them as best he can. Very & 1 often the fellow who insists on Joshing m; 1 his opponent off his game, is the soft- if et kind of a target for such a line of ii' chatter. It is surprising how peeved the f-' "Josher" gets the moment you slip him l his own line of talk. Usually he is un JH able to stand being kidded, because he E- has been accustomed to having thar P- edge. when his opponent refuses to I meet him at hla own game. JOSHING IS NOT GOOD FORM. f Since Joshing Is not considered good 5 form in golf, it probably is not proper r to go back at a fellow with his own ammunition, yet that is very often the only way to successfully handlo an IL unpleasant situation. Golf is a game of concentration. It VJ I is impossible to concentrate If your j. j opponent keeps up a steady line of I I chatter, much of which is personal. .Many a game of golf, baseball, foot- I ball or boxing match Is decided be cause of the ability to get tho goat of I some certain player by joshing him. if It is possible to get a player off his t game In any number of ways. In base- f ball many a catcher with an Interest- f. ing line of chatter diverts the atten- r Hon of the batter. It is impossible to f carry' on a conversation at the plate f and hit the ball fl OFTEN USE UNIQUE SYSTEM. p Some major league catchers are W past masters at this art of keeping the y I batter from concentrating on the pitch. F Very' often their lino of conversation I Is most interesting. If some recruit Jl I Is at the bat. the catcher is probably I (wishing him well, asking him what he jhlt in the minors, or telling him about 1 some one he knew in the recruit's old j homo town. Anything to keep tho batter from I concentrating on hitting the ball. It j 1 is the same in boxing Often some re- f I mark entirely upsets an opponent and I makes him an easy mark, usually because be-cause of anger. In football many a I player Is thrown off his game by the line of chatter that is. directed at him jj by one or more players. Joshing is not supposed to have a 1 placo in golf. However, Just so long as there are players oi that temperament, tempera-ment, it will probably be continued in by those individuals. 00 |
