Show 5af Lake Detective and Burglar Gang Leader Killed in Pistol Battle in Hotel i i , Detective George Hamby of the Salt Like police department was shot dead by Tom Burns, 30 years of age, alleged burglar gang leader, in a Salt Lake hotel this morning, and just a second later Burns fell mortally wounded from the effects of a bullet fired by Chief Joseph Burbidge of the Salt Lake police force. The double shooting took place following en attempt earlier in the morning to rob the J. C. Penney stores. A gang of four attempted to rob the establishment but they made to much noise that attention was attracted to their work. Po'ice captured three of them. Burns, who v. as described as being six icct in height and weighing 200 pounds, was said to be the fourth member of the gang He ot away. Later he wax located in a hotel room. When police entered. Burns fired immediately. Hamby fell dead. Chief of Police Burbidg: then fired at the slayer and he fell wounded, dying a short time later. CKef Burbidge narrowly escaped the ramc fate that befell Hornby, who was 30 years old. One bullet inftictcd a slight wound in the chief's shoulder. |
