Show T5 NOTE WASHINGTON. April 15. The Plumb plan leaguo made public tonight to-night a letter from Senator Harding, of Ohio, answering question? propounded pro-pounded by the league as to how his campaign for the Republican presidential presiden-tial nomination was being financed and as to his attitude toward compell-j ing publication of campaign expcndi-l lures. I The senator said that in fairness to those charged with "abnormal expenditures" expen-ditures" he was impelled to say that he knew of nothing "such as we ordinarily ordi-narily deem corrupt" about them. Of his own campaign, he said: "I do not know precisely how much ha? been expended to date, but at the last conference I held with my managers man-agers we contemplated an expenditure of approximately ?75.000. I do not personally per-sonally know of a single contribution to this fund in excess of one thousand dollars, except that subscribed by myi I brother-in-law, who was good enough , to send in a check for two thousand. 'H ;I do not believe we have a single ; corpora to subscription from ,anv JH cource. Thirty thousand dollars of the fund already raised was subscribed by H jmy friends and neighbors in my homo icily of Marion, Ohio." ,U ! "I quite agree that there ought to fl b some legislation relating to this par- jH iticular question. I do not know what H ; tMs legislation ought to be in its de- H i tails. The bill recently passed by H Senator Borah would hardly be fair. , H His bill would permit the expenditure I of 5-1S0.000, provided a candidate de- A jsiied to expond .$10,000 in every stato JH i of the union, yet such a law would be v jjH 'a very l:mited ono for me under ex- filling circumstances, because of my essentially limiting my activities to ( IjH jtwo or three states other than making I jfl a canvass of rt half dozen or more 11 slates in a general way. 1 "The well organized campaign' in Vjiifl 'Ohio is necessitating the expenditure of considerably more than $10,000 in x if $F that state, and yet I have a confluent fgj belief that my total expenditures wilt be the smallest of any one named as a ' ' I presidential aspirant in the Republi- : ; can party, with the possible exception & jot Dr. Butler, of New York, or Sen- ; 8 ,alor Sutherland, of West Virginia ill W "In short, I cordially agree that we )km jnoed a law putting a becoming )lmi(a- tlon on expenditures relating to pres- I , idential nominations, as well ns we I I do any candidates for membership in P congress or important state offices." 1 j oo , |
