Robertson, an economist, employed em-ployed by the federal trade commission, com-mission, today told the senate manufacture committee that retail dealers were principally responsible respons-ible for high prices of shoes. Tanners Tan-ners and manufacturers, he said, have taken more profits than they should, but the retailers have ini-j posed heavier burdens upon the public than the others. Mr. Robertson said the most effective ef-fective remedy would be for' the public to refuse to patronize merchants mer-chants who charge excessive prices. The high cost of living was due largely to "the associated activities activi-ties of producers and distributors of necessities of life," Mr. Robertson Robert-son said. A lav that would rigidly rigid-ly regulate trade associations would help relieve the situation, he added. "In every instance where a thorough investigation has been made of the trade associations by tho government, violations of law have been found," the witness said. "Has anybody been sent to jail?" asked Senator Kenyon, Republican, Re-publican, Iowa. "No." I; on I |
