It j grips the great heart of Cm iscandotn also. We have entered the jreai movement known as 'the int-rchuifh world movement.' Our ehurciies have not been Qwallowted up i-a )i denoml nation still retains Its organization. but for practical purposes, many ot (he great denominations have Joined I hands and hearts for .1 great world I drive such as the world n'cr saw be fore. I ' This crisis is a challenge to missions. mis-sions. Never since Paul's day has a universal religion seemed so near to n allsation. The doors of all nations are ope nto Christianity. "Again we have a challenge to character. char-acter. Christianity Is primarily : re llcion of love. 'Love thy neighbor as thyself.' said Jesus. 'A new commandment command-ment I give unto you, that ye love one- another.' "We must get back to love love In our homes our churches, be'wei'n man and man, between nation rnd na-llon. na-llon. We must, as cusfodains of the gospel of love, send our missionaries around 'he globe. We have a challenge, too, of faith, faith in God. We must help the world to rediscover God. We must keep a lush way open In ournenrts. Uvea and plans for the full sway of Cod's spirit . "We have also a challenge to per .sniial const-, rat 1011 It is the business of the church to get mn and women aved, and then to train them under CbHStlan influence to go out to fill , every walk of life. "'Go through the gates, Oh hurch j of God, and lift the royal banner hi?h. Go fcrth. proclaim our Savior'" love, ire waiting people faint and die.'" EPISCOPAL CHURCH This being the first Sunday in the Advent aon. the rector of the 1 Church of the Good Shepherd, delivered deliv-ered an appropriate and timely sermon, ser-mon, lakimc his text from the Epistle (for the dajr, Romans XIIM2. "The night is far spent, the dav Is at hand ' He said In part, as follows: j "In the natural order of events the : .lav fOllOWS the night. Shakespeare to I the contrary nolw itheuuding. Night precede the day. This fact le- Impressed Im-pressed upon ua In the first chapter of Genesis, when in the hletory of creation It Is recorded, not a we mljrht hv expected, "the morning and the evening.' but "(he evening and the r.ioroinif were the firnt day- And o phrase la repeated for each of the -ix day till we com- 10 the seventh, In which there Is no mention either of evening or of morning, because ap parently the Sabbath Is a type of the ret that remalneth for the people of God. For In the land of that rest, we are told, there Is no night, yet la there 'no need of the sun or of the moon o shine in it for the glory of the Lord doth lighten It, and the lamp is the light thereof. " nut now In the time of this mortal life, "the night In far -p. nt. the day is at hand." Th'- true Christian beli-s this with all his heart. He cannot deny the blackness of the night, bu: he endures It with serenity becaus he knows that the sun will shine again IN' remembers that it is written. Heaviness may endure for a night, but Joy comcth In the morning' He Uf sure of the morning. He dwells In that upper chamber we read of in the Pilgrim s Progress, whose windows win-dows opened toward the sunrising. and whose name was peace. "The architect builds the chaneel toward the eact. so that the congregation congrega-tion may ta e the dawn. The sun shines In the hancel window at the earf) serMces. which is a symbol of the Christian's hope and Joy. Ex Orients Lux.' The Bible, like the ehureh. had Its origin In the east and travels westward towards the dawning dawn-ing of a new day. The Bible herein storj of human life Is written large and plain, teaches the lesson of bopx You remember what St. Paul SSyM bout it: 'Whatsoever thinjis were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience rnd comfort of 'he Scriptures might He hope." The Old Testament Is :he record of a continual progression from darkness into licht. and all the hopes of Messianic prophecy were hound up in the coming of one who would be a light to lighten the Centiles Si:d the glory of his people in Israel. And when He did come ;ud hope for the time being found fulfilment, what Joy iind gladness same with Him "Christianity entered into human life as the religion of happiness. The New Testament with all Its sin and tragedy Is the gladdest of all glad books. "The men and women who were the earliest followers of Jesus Christ, whose names stand on ihe bricht lists had learned the secret of unfailing hope. They Justified the series of paradoxes which St. Paul wrote in his econd epistle to the Corinthian? They endured necessities and distresses, stripes and imprisonments, and. vet weN known of all men lor their cheerfulness, for their kindness, for their loc unfeigned, and for the benediction of the Holy Spirit which lifted up their hearts They were sorrowful, vet always rejoicing, poor yet making many rich, they had nothing, noth-ing, and yet they possessed all things. "The times In which these people lived were the worst in all history, yet In the midst of all their unex ampled misery there were men and women v. ho walked the streets with such a light ot peueo and happiness and hope shining in their faces, that they were recognized even by those who did not know l hem, as the followers fol-lowers of Jesus Christ. "That is what the Christian religion did and does for men II is 'he re-lision re-lision of the dawn, its proclamation is that God is light, and that in Him is no darkness at all. "Christian faith does not say that there is no darkness, it does not deny that the night is real and dark. What Christian t ait li does say Is that th'j morning cometh, and the darkness luill be light. Let us therefore rejoice re-joice and lift up our heads for our redemption draweth nigh. For now is our salvation nearer than when we believed, the night is far spent, tlx day is at hand, let us therefore cast off the works Of darkness, and let us put on the armor of light." 00 |
