Show AT THE TURNING POINT. With three big strikes disposed of, the prospects are th'; counlrj is about to draw a long breath and go back to work in earnest. Union men have the greatest opportunity so far picser.ted. if the) will get away fiom the strike and, instead of playing into the hands B of great wealth by trying to impoverish themselves, proceed to strengthen their hands by perfecting their organizations, and urging constantly urging improved conditions for the working classes. Efficiency also should be maintained to the point of an honest day's work. With this country short on production, the one way to bring ' all the necessities of life to within the reach of the families of work ing men is to produce moie goods. While the demand is greater than the supply, prices will be most difficult to control ana labor will bfi restless and discontented. Our government should hold down the margin of profit of manufacturers, manu-facturers, wholesalers and retailers, and the industrial workers should give their eight hours of honest effort. Then, as a people, we will begin to recover from the unrest that prevails. Unionism has come to stay because the workers must b'1 banded together to-gether to resist an equally, oi even more, powerful combination of wealth. Furthermore, unionism is necessary to resist the greed of unscrupulous un-scrupulous employers. Not all employers are mercenary, in fact only a small per cent, but in a competitive age the unfair employer who would beat down wages and insist on unreasonable hours ccild force honestly disposed rivals to pursue the same course and thus send the whole structure of fair dealing toppling to the ground. We have arrived at the point where there must be a better understanding. under-standing. On the one hand, the hopes and aspirations of the workers work-ers must be better realized; on the other hand, the need of establishing establish-ing confidence in the business world must be appreciated. The toilers toil-ers must be compensated so as to maintain their fanuLej in comfort, and the men of money must be allowed to reap a reward which will encourage them to reinvest and continue with the mighty undertakings undertak-ings that are maintaining this country in the lead of all rations in productivity and prosperity. |
