I The expendl-1 ture of $58,700 In paing returned sol-1 diem hired as laborers on road con-' struction work so drained the city's I treasury as to make increase of the' tax levy by one-fourth of a mill un-avoidable un-avoidable according to the unanimous, conclusion of the city commissioners after three days of wrestling with the city budget. The levy last year was 6 7". mills. Last evening, after a full day of Jug - 1 gllng figures, the commission passed a resolution fixing it at 7 mills this year. The additional one-fourth mill, v. ill result, it is estimated, in $48,500 increase of revenue, $10,200 less than the actual amount paid to the soldiers.! In aditltlon, it was necessary to take' into consideration the demand of la- , borers for the raising of the maximum wage scale to $4, for which $20,000 was appropriated. Appropriations made during 'he revision re-vision of 'he budget, in adidtion to i those made at the time of the making up of the budget at the beginning of I the year, include 118,425:94 to the! street department. $14,935.50 to the waterworks department, $1100 to the city attorney's budget. ?1500 to the recorder's re-corder's office and $6r0 to the city treasurer's office.
