Show oo Preventive Medicine To Receive Attention Of Utah University SALT LAKE. Aug. 7. For the purpose pur-pose of furthering the campaign to j prevent the preentable ui disea.-i and physical defects, the University of (ltah has established a department of I hygiene and preventive medicine, the ; function of which is to furnish information infor-mation on the fundamental rules of sanitation, hygiene, infant w elfare, the 'control of social diseases and other subjects pertaining to the general 'health, it was announced by officials of the university yesterday. Dr. Heber J Sears, formerly of Chicago, Chi-cago, has been placed in charge Of the work, and a corps of ihe state -; best physicians has been secured to aid him. The department will work in cooperation co-operation with the state board of health, the local health authorities in the various communities, and with organizations or-ganizations for social betterment. Lecturers Lec-turers on any subject dealing with public health matters will be furnished fur-nished by the department wherever re-quests re-quests are made. The expenses of these lectures will be borne entirely by the university; they will 'be delivered in language readily understood by the layman: tliey will be based on the best scientific data available. The department will also make health surveys for the purpose of de- termining the problems peculiar to the I various communities of the state, and' 'will endeavor to find a remedy for the I conditions Those in charge of the department de-partment declare that good authority 'shows that 3,000,000 people in the Unit-j ed States are seriously ill at all times with ailments which bv proper caution could be prevented; that fifteen years may be added to the average span of life by observing the known laws of health, and that practically all minor ailments are avoidable bj correct h-icnc h-icnc It is the object of the new de-1 de-1 partment to put this information to practical use. 1 The state legislature has made an appropriation ap-propriation for the work and by complying com-plying with the government requirements, require-ments, the department ha been grant ed $12,000 from the interdepartmental i social hygiene board at Washington. In describing the objects of the new 'department yesterday. Dr. Sears said: j "The people of Utah are to be con-'gralulated con-'gralulated on having a university with j the pioneer spirit. In no way is this spirit shown more than in the bold step taken in the establishment of this department. de-partment. Few institutions of the kind in the United States have, so far, had tne courage and vision necessary for I such an undertaking. Work to- Reach Remote Districts, j "The work of the department will jnot be confined to the teaching of stu-i stu-i dents in the university, but its greatest (activity will be in the extension divi-i Ision, carrying the gospel of good I health to rural communities all over the state, helping men to solve their 'problems. It is necessary to have an j educated public to sustain and main tain efficient public health measures iand people must be made to realize that bUCk diseases as typhoid fever are I preventable, and that where they exist in epidemic form, it is the result of criminal negligence. "To correct an evil we must go to its source and. knowing the source, it is usually possible to prevent it. Thp source of ill health is frequently due to Ignorance of certain fixed laws, hence the people must be made acquainted ac-quainted with these laws. The depart-' ment aims to educate the people in this regard.
