Show ICITY COMMISSI VOTES TO INCREASE ' THE AL101IE TO MARTHA SOCIETY I HOME FROM THIRTY TO FIFTY DOLLARS 1 . I In city commission this morninc voted to increase the city's allowanci to the Martha society from $30 to $50 j a month when a committee of ladies from the locietj called upon the board l;nd explained the work which they are carrying on anil the urgent need for funds The committee which waited upon the board of commissioners was com-posed com-posed of President Mrs 10. O. Wattis. Secretary Mrs Thompson Corn, anil 'Mrs. E M Conroy This committee explained that the county is nw U-lowing U-lowing the society the sum of $60 a month, but which they desire to ha Q i increased to a more .substantial tiure ' In discussinK the matter of the nances and the work the society is doing do-ing for homeless children in Weber COUnt it was emphasized thai the 'chief burden of supporting ihe institution institu-tion should fall upon the county, and the belief was expressed by the city commissioners that if the county com-Imissioners com-Imissioners were given a complete re-! re-! port they would at once increase the county's allowance to at least $150. This sum, loeether with the added amount, granted by the city, it was stated by the committee, would permit of a freer feelinc among the members I of the society with regard to continuing continu-ing the work in the same broad sen-i-ral way that it has been carried on in the past. The state allowance was also explained ex-plained by the ladles and it was shown that favoritism has been shown to the Bali Lake institutions in the distribution distribu-tion of state funds Last year Ogden received from the state funds only $1,000 for the Marth i society, which ha-s an average numb'T ol more than 50 children in the home, while a similar Institution in the capital capi-tal city has an average attendance of eight children and does not keep them I over night, but yet received $6,000 lor last year. The committee explained that they felt this wa noi jusiire to the Ocden institution and to the work they were cr rryins on. 'We have from sixty to sixty-five i hildren at the Martha home all the Lime and take care of them mcht and day, while this Salt Lake institution ha but an average of eight children which it takes rare of only during the day-time and yet received $5,000 or five times more than we received with eight times more children," said a member of the committee. The Bame member said also concerning concern-ing the Orphans' Home in Salt Lake 'iiv thai I' i now caring for abou' 125 children, only twice tho number of i lie Ogden Martha society home, and i t ji received from the state the sum Of $15.00(1 for a year. "This year we have been promised the sum of $4,000 from the state,' n I this member, "but we have received but $2,000 up to the present time, and we feel that we cannot count on the bulanee until li is paid to us We keep an accurate account of every cent paid out and make a report to the state, so they know what we are doing and there Is no real excuse for showing show-ing such favoritism to Salt Lake. This Is a matter of vital concern to all good citizens whether they reside in Salt jake, Provo, Ogden or soinf other city or town in the state. Little children should not be made the playthings of politicians when their welfare is at stake." It was alleged by members of the committee that the " irphans' Home in Sail Lake is not kept in such good order or-der as the Martha Home, in spite of the difference In the state support. It was also announced that the Martha society Is to hold a field day on Monday, Mon-day, July 14, at C.raycllff, the summer home in Ojvien canyon of Mrs Thomas l Pee. becinnint with a luncheon at 12 o'clock noon. |
