C, will bo read , .with Interest by many Ogden people: I ! Editor Standard: Senator William 1 1 H. King has contracted the Spanish 1 influenza. According to Mr. Winters, ' J stenographer in Senator King's ofllce, tho senator came to his ofllce Sunday ' nfternoon, and apparently felt in good .health. He dictated n number of let- ' ters and left for home. Soon after ar riving homo ho was seized with a so-j so-j ,vere attack of "grip," and has -been confined to his bed ever since. It was I just learned today that the senator j really had Spanish influenza. It is; 1 ( therefore, impossible to determine just 1 how serious the case might be. He is I being cared for In his apartment by I the family physician and Mrs. King. No other members of the family have ! as yet contracted the, disease. ! "The Spanish influenza," "Three -day ' Fever," or "The Flu" as it is called here, has caused no little consternation consterna-tion among the thousands of war workers in Washington, D. C. Although tho latest reports from the CDistrlct Health officials state that tho epidemic 1 appears to bo temporarily checked, everyone seems to have a fear that the I disease may develop most seriously among the congested population of tho capltol. 1 A number of steps have been taken , to check tho spread of the Spanish in- I fluenza. Secretary McAdoo has an nounced a change in the working hours of some of the government officers in 1 1 street cars and on the, streets before ' and after work. Some of the- depart - 1 ments have been obliged to begin work I a.L7r30. others at .8, S:C0, 9 and 9:30 in the morning. The two big Liberty loan ( j parades, scheduled for October 5th and 12th have been cancelled for the time I being. Printed literature is also being dis- j tributed among the war workers as a safeguard against the spread of Spanish Span-ish influenza. Today the surgeon general's gen-eral's ofllce published a circular entitl- 1 od "Spanish Influenza," ''Three -day 1 Fever," "The Flu." A short compre hensive article Is contained therein ( untler such titles as "What is Span- I ish influenza? Is it something new? j Does it come from Spain? Plow can Spanish Influenza bo recognized? What' is tho course of tho disease? Do poo- . pie die of It? What causes the disease, and how is it spread? What should be dono by those who catch the disease' ( Will a person who has had tho disease before catch tho disease acaln? How, must one guard against influenza? The little pamphlet ends its message by the suggestive moral: "Cover up each cough and sneeze, If you don't you'll spread disease." Everyone seems to havo a horror of coughing and sneezing. One would be about ns popular -to sneeze or to cough In a crowd without covering his j mouth br nose as he would to "Hoch Der Kaiser'" ' Leland Evans, who has been employed em-ployed as stenographer in Senator' King's ofllce, 'has been inducted into ' the Students' Training corps at George ( Washington university. He will be sue- 1 ceeded in his position at Senator I King's oflico by Czar Smith Winters, ! now employed by tho Utah -Idaho Sug- ! ar company In Its Garland ofllce. i I just called Mrs. King on the phone A The senator's fever seems to be gone but he Is suffering of severe headache and general pains.
