New rates aro ioubt. a's0, on cao and hogs from can Joaquin valley points to Ogden or tho Ogden Packing & Provision ; comPanJ'' nnd 'or rales on cn'P 'windlasses 'wind-lasses now being manufactured by the Salt Lake Iron & Steel company for lj!pment to Pacific ooast shipyards. The Ogden Packing & Provision ' company now has orders from the Government for Immediate shipment of 150,000 pounds of fresh meat for tho flCS in Europe and 500,000 pounds ' for shipment to Chicago, all of this jaat being sold by the Ogden concern m competition with tho packers at Missouri river, Chicago, Denver and other points. The piescnt rate on fresh meat from Odcn to the Missouri river, according to Mr PrickeU, Is $1.75 per hundred pounde. The petition, prepared by Mr. Prckeit, sets forth that the rate from Osden to the Missouri river, to be just jnd reasonable In comparison with the ratrs from Denver to the Missouri mcr should be ?1.30 per hundred pounds, and, to be fair with the rate3 on cattle from Utah points to tho Missouri Mis-souri rier. should be $1.05 per hundred hun-dred pounds. Relation Pointed Out. Mr Prlokett shows that tho Interstate Inter-state commerce commission has decided de-cided In numerous cases that there jhould be a certain relation in the rates as between the live animal and the dressed product, this date, $1.05 J per huhdred pounds, being the result of a percentage relation established by the commission in its investigation of alleged unreasonable rates on meats In tho Oklahoma, Texas and Kansas fields. At tho present time the Ogden Packing & Provision company Is con-, con-, tomplating purchasing cattle and hogs In considerable quantities at points in central California, and seeks tho establishment es-tablishment of what it considers reasonable rea-sonable rates on theso commodities from the western territory to Ogden. Present rates on cattle from San Joaquin Joa-quin valley points to Ogden are made, It is stated, on the combination of the local rate based over Stockton, Cal. The petition seeks the establishment of lower through rates based on a mileage scale generally in use between points In California, Arizona and New Mexico, -which were established, Mr. Prickctt shows, following a decision of the interstate commerce commission In the case of the American Livestock Live-stock association versus tho Southern Pacific railroad and others. Illustrating the apparent unfairness in rates to Utah, Mr. Prickctt points out that the present rate on cattle from Bakorsfield. Cal., to Ogden. distance dis-tance 9G5 miles, is $210.50 per carload. The rato petitioned for is $1 IS per carload, car-load, which is tho maximum rate on the same .commodity applicable from Bakersfleld to a point on the Atchison. Topeka & Santa Fe-in New Mexico, 965 miles east of Bakersfleld. |
