Show EUGENE V. DEBS CASE BEFORE JURY CLEVELAND, 0., Sept 12. The case of Eugene Debs, Socialist leader charged with violation of the espionage espion-age act, was given to a jury in the United States district court here today. to-day. His defense consisted of an address by himself yosterday in which he explained ex-plained that ho was working for tho good of the whole world, but as to the chargos he said: "I deny nothing; I repudiate noth- ing; I retract nothing." In Judgo Westenhaver's instructions to the jury he pointed out that tho crime charged could bo committed only in time of war. "One's political belief no more than his religious belief cannot be accepted accept-ed as an excuse," pointed ou tho court. Debs listened intently to the instructions in-structions and followed the Jury with his eyes as it filed out. |
