American troops of all units have been instructed (o kill on the spot any one who in timo ot battle urges surrender or attempts to persuade them that further resistance is usoless. These instructions which originated with a certain division and have now been universally adopted because they proved so popular, were made necessary neces-sary because some one In American uniform during a German attack on Fismetto on August 27 ran among tho troops calling upon them to cease resistance re-sistance and declaring that the olf.cers advised surrender. The instiuctions point out lhat the-se statements were absolutely false and added: "The person who sp ead3 such an alarm is either an enemy in our uniform or one of our own troops win is disloyal and a traitor or one of our :r nps who has become a pai c-strlcK-en coward. Whoever he is ne rnould bo snot on tho spot. In battle then is no timo to iuire into no identity or motives of persons who create panic or disorganization, or why advise sur-rrndcr. sur-rrndcr. "It is the duty of every officer and soldier to kill on the spot any person who In a fight urges any one to surrender sur-render or stop fighting. It makes no difference whether the pcrBon is a stranger or a friend, an officer or a private." The instructions conclude with 'the statement that a Gorman soldier was found mortally wounded far inside the American lines at Fismelte. He had lived for a long time in America and spoke English well and possibly ho intended in-tended to get an American uniform and create doubt, or disorganization among the men. |
