Washington, Jan. 15. When the house rules committee resumed this morning its investigation charges of a leak of advance Information regard-! regard-! Ing President Wilson's peace note, word was received from Thomas w. Lawson of Boston, who was to have (been the first witness, that he had j been delayed, but would appear later In the day. Chairman Henry then directed the' ; sergeant-at-arms to get immediate ser-! vice on Lawson to brine him before the committee after which a recess was taken pending his arrival when called to the stand Lawson will face a list of written questions whose answer an-swer is demanded under threat that if he refuses he may be cited for contempt con-tempt and imprisoned if declared 1 guilty. The committee ted to recommend j to the house the adoption of another I resolution which would broaden the i scope of the Inquiry still further and I extend the time in which it might re-, re-, port to ninety days. Later, Chairman Henry received a j telegram from Iawson saying he would arrive at 2 p. m. Henry then set the time for the hearing to resume at three. Lawson Lays Down Conditions. It developed during the recess that Chairman Henry received a letter from Lawson yesterday laying down certain conditions under which he would testify. His principal conten tion, it is undecstood, was that a special spec-ial congressional committee be formed to interrogate him. The rules committee commit-tee will not heed the condition. lames Reilly, nws manager of the Wall Street Journal, and Donald Mc. Donald, had of a Boston financial bureau, to whom Lawson is said to have given 'he name of the congress, man who he says told him the name of a cabinet member, a congressman and a broker who were involved in stock market exchanges were waiting to testify. Two Resolutions Offered. Two resolutions to strengthen the power of the rules committee to compel com-pel witnesses to answer questions, were proposed by Representative Garrett, Gar-rett, a member of the committee, and were adopted soon after the house met One of them was general in character, but the other would compel Lawson to give namos specifically Representative Campbell, Republi. can, today introduced a resolution for a special committee of five to deal Mth i he "leak" situation. |
