Show SMELTERS MAY OPERATE ROADS The Tribune says: A persistent rumor has been afloat in railroad circles for several daj-s to the effect that the United States Smelting, Refining & Mining company com-pany contemplates taking over tho operation op-eration of the Utah railroad from Castle Cas-tle Gate to Mohrland by way of Black Hawk and' Hiawatha and the second track of the Denver &. Rio Grande from Castle Gate to Provo. According to the rumor, the smelting company is not satisfied satis-fied with operating policies of the Denver & Rio Grande and now plans to assume the operation of both lines. A. B. Apperson, vice president and general manager of the United States Fuel company one of tho holdings of tho United States Smelting, Refining & Mining company has been in the east for some time working on a plan, rumor has it, whereby the smelting company, or tho fuel company, may j take charge of the operation of the Utah railroad and the Rio Grande second sec-ond main track from Castle Gate to Provo. Other officials of the United States Fuel company declined to discuss dis-cuss the mater yesterday. The chief objection to the present arrangement, It is said, is that the United States Fuel companv is not receiving re-ceiving cars needed at the" mines. At the time the Denver & Rio Grande assumed as-sumed the operation of the smelting company's tracks, It is rumored, an agreement was made providing that tho United States Fuel company should bo furnished all the cars needed need-ed at its mines in the Carbon county district, inasmuch as there has been a general car shortage during the past year, the assertion that this part of the contract has not been carried out to the letter has met with no denial. fniin Ill.l. If the smelting company assumes the operation of the Utah railroad and tho second main track of tho Denver & Rio Grande between Castle Gate and Provo it Is considered likely that a traffic agreement will be made with the Salt Lake Route whereby the latter lat-ter company will handle the traffic between Provo and Salt Lake. 00 |
