Show MOB PREPARES TO LYNCH JljiHERlFF Lima. Ohio, Scene of Rioting Following Negro's Assault on White Woman. Lima, Ohio, Aug. 31. Enraged at the success of Sheriff Serman Eley in spiriting Charles Daniels, a negro, accused of assaulting Mrs, John Barber, Bar-ber, young wife of a prominent farmer, farm-er, out of their reach early this evening, even-ing, a mob tonight captured the sheriff, sher-iff, seriously wounded him, placed a noose around his neck and forced him to direct a cortege of 100 automobiles into the rough country north of this city, where it is supposed tho negro prisoner has been hidden. The motor mob with She.rlff Eley was located at a late hour," after deserting the scene whore they xhad overpowered the Lima police and fire department at the jail, court house and the residence resi-dence of the sheriff, and forced the sheriff's wife and other women to flee from their anger with a small baby In arms. The mob formed around the Lima jail before dusk and leaders demanded demand-ed admittance. Chic? of Police Kinney Kin-ney called out his entire force but the officers were overpowered in a hand-to-hand fight, though the mob was heavily armed. Refusing Refus-ing to accept the announcement the mob forced Mrs. Eley to open the cells. Sheriff Eley returned at 9:40 o'clock and was met by the mob at the city limits. They demanded that he deliver the prisoner or tell where he was hidden. The sheriff reached his residence and refused to give up the negro. The mob then broke in the front door as Eley escaped through a rear entrance. He was caught when entering the Elks home and attacked. His clothes were stripped from his body and he was battered and kicked by the mob. Two of his ribs were broken. A rope was taken from the trolley of a street car, and the noose placed about his neck. Eley held out even after the mob had thrown tho noose over the crossarm of a telephone pole. "Kill tho nigger protector." yelled the mobbers, as the crowd swayed over tho sheriff, knocking him to the pavement and preventing those who held the rope from stringing him up on the noose. The lynch-crazed feet of many men crushed the sheriff, snapping' ribs and tearing his flesh until he cried out that lie would tell where tho negro was secreted. Then the sheriff was lifted to an automobile truck and the rioters dashed away in the direction direc-tion indicated by the sheriff. While the mob held Eley prisoner under the telephone pole, Chief of Police Kinney called upon citizens to join his force but was refused. Tho fire department was called out, but arrived just as the mob was starting away. The motor fire trucks were run three abreast down the street, mob that had not joined tho motor procession, and the men on foot were dispersed. It is understood that the mob was led by a band of fnrmers from the vicinity of the Barber country home, where the assult occurred early this morning. A posse of 200 men with bloodhounds, caught the negro, Daniels, Dan-iels, in a wood in the same township later In the morning. At 1 o'clock it was learned that the motor mob had gone to Ottawa, a town eighteen .miles distant, where Sheriff Eley had taken Daniels and turned him over to the authorities there. The Ottawa authorities again transferred the prisoner to another county seatt the name of which Is suppressed. sup-pressed.
