Show Calcium Chloride Stops Freezing of Water in Radiator Calchun chloride solution is very 'popular for Oils purposo and is on the whole quite satisfactory. It cannot lie used, however, in any car where the solution will come in contact with , I two kinds of metals, because it "will S cause an' electrolytic action between M them and eat them out. The calcium chloride is obtained from hydrochlor- ldo acid, which is very active on met-I met-I als. The least presence of the acid In m the solution Is harmful, so only com-1 com-1 morcially pure calcium chloride can be 1 used, I The freezing temperature of a cal- cium chloride solution will be as fol-M fol-M Iowb: 1 Two pounds to one gallon of water 1 freezes at 18 degrees above zero. r Three pounds to one gallon of water m "freezes at 1 degrees above zero. I Four pounds to one gallon of water I freezes at 17 degrees below zero. If I too much of the chloride is present in j the water, however, some of 11 will J crystallze and clog the radiator. fc There are several commercial com- pounds on the market for this purpose l that have a great deal of merit. They are compounded as the result of care- ful investigations by the men who j make them. There have been, and still are, some fake compounds on the market that arc actually harmful. These companies, however, do not last long as a rule and their product is soon forgotten. With a little care one can avoid these companies and find the reliable ones. A thing which every motorist Bhould have Is a heavy blanket to throw over the radiator and hood whenever the car is to stand awhile. Even though the radiator is filled with a low freezing freez-ing solution, tho ubo of a 'blanket in this way is a good thing because a I warm engine starts so much easier m and gives so much better service at the start than does a cold engine In cold weather the radiator has much more cooling capacity than Is needed, and In many cases it will keep the engine so cool that it loses some of its efficiency unless tho radiator is partly covered up. A hood to put over the radiator which will cover up half of the surface is a good thing to prevent pre-vent this overcooling, and it will also help to .prevent the radiator getting cold so fast when tho car is standing Idle. nn |
