Show 00 STATE POLITICS IN UTAH. In the early part of August the' State Republican convention will meet in Ogdeir This gathering of the clans promise to be far more exciting than at any time in the past. There was, at one time, a "federal bunch" at the head of the party In Utah, and the "bunch," so we are informed, in-formed, ruled with an Iron hand. Every Ev-ery office within reach was peddled for political service and state funds were employed to promote private enterprise. en-terprise. The man with a political pull had the power to subvert good government govern-ment and the rlngster won high favor. But the "bunch" has suffered internal in-ternal discord and a division has re sulted, so that today the Herald-Republican on the one side and the Tribune Tri-bune on the other are explaining to the public the iniquities with which the people havo been afflicted. Reading the two sides, the public must be forced to tho conclusion that thero is something rotten in Denmark. Den-mark. Plero Is the Tribune's comment of this morning: "With due solemnity the Herald-Re publican calls upon everybody to take 1 the oath and be mustered into the 'fed l eral bunch before daring to say a word j on Republican politics. That great, liberal newspaper which nover has dis-1 dis-1 played prejudice or bias on any sub-- sub-- jeet, which always has supported l good government by supporting federal fed-eral bunch candidates, desires The Tribune to take tho oath of allegiance to tho bunch before voicing an opinion on the state's governmental affairs. ' We are aware that wo have stated the proposition in a way to cause the Herald-Republican and the federal bunch some mental anguish. They are eager to mask tholr designs behind be-hind tho screen of party loyalty, but tho fact remains that they demand a federal bunch candidate and are apoplectically angry at Governor Spry because he has refused to 'crook the pregnant hinges of the knee' at their dictation. They want a gang candidate candi-date and no soft editorial words can deceive tho public as to their purpose. pur-pose. And for that reason thoy would have all except members of the federal fed-eral bunch maintain silence about the important question of tho governorship." governor-ship." The most important point In the foregoing is not that the gang is attempting at-tempting to discipline Governor Spry. The Information that Utah has been ruled by a gang Is tho impressive thing. The Tribune conveys the idea that already tho voters of Utah have manifested man-ifested a preference In this quarrel of tho federal bunch. Our opinion Is that the people are yet to be heard from. Truo many good men and men of high standing In this and other communities com-munities in Utah have declared themselves. them-selves. A number have acted through personal consideration, others are avowedly -for the wet side, all, we take it, are laboring for what tb,ey deem to be right, but they make up a very small fraction of the electorate of this state. The Tribune and Herald-Republican in their bitter fight, are tending to convince the great body of the people that Utah, in the past, has been sinned sin-ned against and is very much in need of a political house cleaning. |
