Show NO POLL TAX CI BE COLLECTED Salt Lake, April 25. Discovery was made by the county commlsioners that no poll tax may be colected by Salt Lake county this year. Failure of tho county to mall notices by April 1, In compliance with, requirements of the lav.', leaves tho county helpless to collect the tax. Tho poll tax should be collected in the Interest of proposed county road improvements was decided yesterday morning by the board of county com- misioners. Tho question had been under advisement for some time past. I The county clerk, Thomas Homer, was Instructed to draw a resolution levy- , ing the tax In its preparation ho . discovered the legal provision that no- ' tlces must be mailed on or before April 1. The board accordingly concluded that It had delayed too long in determining deter-mining to levy the tax, and countermanded counter-manded the order of the cleric for the drawing 0f the resolution. The commissioners were advised yesterday yes-terday morning, in an opinion from the county attorney, that the heads of departments are not answerable to tho commissioners for dismissals in their respective offices. Tho opinion opin-ion set forth that the head of each department is an elected officer and that as such he and his bondsmen are responsible to the voters and not to the county commissioners. The opinion was occasioned by the appeal of Mrs. Kent O. Keyes and Phyllis Lynch to the board after they were dismissed from the offico of tho county coun-ty attorney, the board having asked the county attorney for an opinion as to its legal right to interfere. Another opinion from the county attorney advised the board that it had no legal right to allow Mrs. Keyes $30 for rent on her typewriter, which she claimed to have used in tho service u ' iijiiLuimj., 2111 of the county while in the county clerk's office. Her claim was accordingly accord-ingly denied. A recommendation made by Acting County Physician C. N.
