Cannon of 1 the Weber academy i department of M music, delighted a largo crowd of local H music lovers last night in their annual H recital at the academy. Miss Romania H Hyde, violiniste, also of the academy M music department teaching staff, was H the assisting artist and her playing H was received at a rare treat H The heavy numbers of the evening H were Rlayed by the Misses Ellen Meis- B sner and Gladys Peterson, who are m already well established locally, as m pianists. Miss 'Melssner contributed M Chopin's "Ballade In G Minor" and m Miss, Peterson, Mendelssohn's "Con- M certo In, Q Minor", ambitious selec- B tions for soloists of their experience. M Their renditions were entirely suc- fl cessful, both displaying the possession H of strength, advanced technique and H muslclanly control and knowledge of M interpretation. The "playing of each M was greeted with well earned t and M enthusiastic applause. M Next in Importance was a group of M two numbers, "Prelude in C Sharp 1 Minor" (Rachmaninoff) and "Fantasle H Impromptu" (Chopin), given by Miss H Beatrioe Young with fine effect. The H numbers were well chosen to bring H out the capabilities of this promising H ' pianist and their interpretation was H much enjoyed. M Miss Amy Shupe, in two selections, B "The Lark" (Gllnka-Balakirew) and H "Polichinelle" (Rachmaninoff), show- H ed marked improvement over her H work In the annual recital last year, H overcoming greater technical diffl- H culties and displaying the confidence H that comes with a sure grasp of the B work in band. m Gpttschalk's "The Last Hope," as H played by Miss Rena Downs, was one H of the most pleasing numbers of the H evening, the beautiful basic melody be- H lng brought out with appreciable ef- fl feet through careful shading of Its M pianlstlc setting. Miss Downs also H gave a successful rendition of "Polka H de Concert," a technically difficult H composition by Bartlett H Miss Viola Taylor was heard to H advantage in two short Schumann H compositions, "Warum?" and "Aufs- B chung" and Miss Zola Ballantyne, who H opened the program gave delightful H renditions of two melodious composi- 1 tions "Polish. Dance" (X. Scharwenka) H and "Kammenol-OBtrow" (Rubinstein). H Miss Hyde's contributions to the H program woto "Canzonetta" (D Am- j broslo), "Cradlo Song" (Schubert-El- H man) and "Mazurka Concert" (Ovide j Musin), numbers of contrasting type, and in each rendition the Salt Lake violiniste displayed the polished technique tech-nique and musicianship that lias won her a place among the state's tew violinists vio-linists of artistic caliber. Miss Hyde waa ably assisted by Mr. Cannqn, at the piano, and each ot her numbers was enthusiastically applauded. oo |
