These emblems are of various designs, each denot- I' ing the exact standing of the wearer, jp It is used as a passport admitting the L wearer to the dens where others are kept out The discovery of the existence of ? this code, which is used by opinn smugglers in all parts of the United ' States, was made by federal officials at Los Angeles and later checked , with officials of this and other states. In Los Angeles recently five men L were arrested for opium smuggling and the men with one exception vpre 1 a tattoo mark on the left arm. The 9 men were proficient in knowledge of I the Chinese language and when ques- I tioned regarding the tattoo mark3 1 stated that they were emblems of Chinese Masonry. This statement, however, was disproved on information informa-tion furnished by reputable ChlneH and Americans familiar with the CM-nese CM-nese Masonic organization. Further investigation is said to have brought to light the fact that ,' this code is used In the form of tat- f too marks, but also certain combina- tlons of the marks, together with Cil- t nese and Mexican words, are used 25 a means of communication.
