Show NORWAY ENTERS STRONG PROTEST Seizure of Mails by German Submarine Stirs Authorities of Norwegian Government. Govern-ment. STORM IS AROUSED All Printed Matter and Packages Pack-ages Jettisoned and Letters and Monies Left Christiania, Norway, Aug. 19, via London, 12:20 p. m. The sailing yesterday yes-terday of the Norwegian mail steamer Haakon VIII, and the seizure of mails on board by a German submarine have been followed by a protest to Berlin and a demand for the return of the mails to Norway. The Haakon Haa-kon VIII was bound from Bergen to England. Much Mail Destroyed. The postmaster general reports the commander of the German submarine ordered the jettisoning of all printed matter and packages aestlned to England. Eng-land. France, Italy or other countries hostile to Germany. All letters and remittance moneys ere said to have been taken aboard the submarine. The mail consisted of accumulation since the sailing on Monday of the previous steamer. Included were seven sev-en sacks of mail from Denmark. What tho newspapers term "tho mail theft," has aroused a storm of resentment. German submarines nro said to be watching every inlet to the important ports of Norway |
