California Petroleum preferred was heavy on rumors of a hitch in connection with its proposed merger with Mexican Petroleum. Mexican, Mex-ican, on the contrary, opened strong with gains in coppers. Mercantile Marine Ma-rine preferred and New York Airbrake. Air-brake. United States Steel was steady but leading rails, Including St Paul, Pennsylvania, Lehigh Valley and Eries were higher by fractions to a full point. Wheat prices took a downward swing today, influenced by lower quotations from Liverpool, despite the fact that the foreign decline de-cline was said to be mainly a reflection reflec-tion of yesterday's weakness here. Opening prices, which ranged from 1-4 off to 1-Sc up, with May at $1.23 to 1.23 3-8 and July at $1.16 1-8, were followed by a decided general setback and then a rally that failed to last. Corn went lower with wheat. After opening unchanged to 14c down, the market underwent a moderate sage all around. Oats eased oft with other grain. Larger warehouse stocks than had been looked for acted as a weight on the provision market. Buyers were scarce. The wheat close was strong, 2 1-S to 2 l-22 5-8c net higher, with May at $1.25 3-4(5)1.25 78 and Julv at $1.18 3-S. The corn close was firm at 5-8 to 5-S34c net advance. Chicago. Jan. 4.
