Show CANALS ON MARS ARE ARTIFICIAL Scientists Say Two New Canals Ca-nals on Mars Proved to Be Artificial Both 1,000 Miles Long. Inthe thirteen years between 1896 anil 1909, two new canals made their appearance on Mars, and observations made over a range of more than twenty twen-ty j-ears at Flagstaff observatory have convinced scientists that these now waterways are artificial. Both are 1,000 miles long and of a geometric character slender, regular lines of faultless curvature beyond the power pow-er of unassisted nature to contrive. Dr. Perclval Lowell, In a recent address ad-dress on the new canals of Mars, made these statements. "To be certain of change (on the surface of Mars) not simply seasonable season-able in character, the planet must ha-ve been studied minutely and long by the same observer. The Identity of the observer eliminates tho personal person-al equation, a very important matter, the minuteness removes the question of the canal having been missed when really present, and the length of time enables the region concerned to have been viewed at a like season of the Martian year thus preventing the annual an-nual seasonal development of a marking mark-ing from masquerading as a new creation. crea-tion. "Owing to the thoroughness with which tho planet had been studied for fifteen years previously at Flagstaff, such a record had been secured and now proed its importance. "The records testified that the region re-gion to the left of tho Syrtis -Major, one of the best known parts of the planet, had been scanned at this observatory ob-servatory ever since 1894 that is, at every approach to the earth for fifteen fif-teen years and these canals had not revealed themselves. At the oppositions opposi-tions of 1S94 and 1S96 the region had presented Itself at the sam season of the Martian yearth in which in 1.909 they had been discovered, and yet they had then failed to show. "Thus they wero self-confessed newly new-ly created canals, or new employment of fallow ones; either of which alternatives alter-natives argues artificiality in their construction." Dr Lowell also said that the Martian Mar-tian day was 24 hours 37 minutes and 32 58 seconds long. |
