Show OREGON'S SUNDAY ! LAW IS ENFORCED Portland, Ore., Jan. 3, Oregon's Sunday closing law, enacted in 1864-, and which for many years-has languished, lan-guished, was declared today constitutional constitu-tional and effective, by Judge Charles E. Wolverton of the federal district court here. The law prohibits the transaction of business on Sunday by mercantile houses, theatres, grocery gro-cery stores, pool and billiard halls and other places of amusement. The only concerns permitted to do business busi-ness on Sunday are bakeries, hotels and undertaking establishments. For the first time in its history as a city, Portland tonight ended a twenty-four hour period without an arrest for drunkenness or disorderly conduct If the new prohibition law had been violated no officer had been able to ascertain the fact. A large number of persons who had been arrested ar-rested on New Year's eve for drunkenness drunk-enness were released today and the city jail showed less congestion than at any time in months. oo |
