Show MfiS. KATE S. HILLIflRD I ok'pipieb I FOR PEACE' I Mrs. Kate S. Hilllard was the speak- H er last night at the opening meeting H of tho Sunday Night club, held In the M Guild hall of the Church of the Good B Shepherd, Twenty-fourth street and IH Grant avenue. Her subject was "Pre- H paredness for Peace" and in part she H said : H "Peace can never bo made perman- M ent without the people becoming edu- H cated to the doctrine of universal 'H brotherhood, which is the underlying H principle of Socialism. The European H war is a war solely for commercial H supremacy and the direct outgrowth 'H of bitterness and hatred engendered H by strife between capital and labor. H Various strikes of recent date in the H United States substantiate the claim jM that tho same conditions which pre- H ceded the European war exist in this H country and the leaders of the labor H movement are also leaders in a grow- H Ing sentiment for an improved condi- 'H tlon that will result ultimately in unl- M versal brotherhood. H "Christianity, as Interpreted in H creeds and by various denomination, M has failed to establish any insurance M against war, and militarists and antl- H militarists have alike failed to find M a solution of the problem which H means either war or poaco. Patriot- H ism Is only a barricade for the nations 'H to hide behind whon they seek to de- JM 8 troy each other. Women should take H a part in devising means for the pres- H orvatlon of mankind and should revolt against rearing boys to bo shot to l death in a war that has commercialism H as Its motive." H Tho meeting was largely attended H and practically every person present IH took part in an Informal discussion H that followed the address. H |
