Show HOT SPRINGS IS NOT UNDER OMIT! FOR DISEASE So persistent has been the rumor the past two weeks that infections of the ear, nose, eye and throat had been traced to the Utah Hot Springs that Sanitary Inspector George Shorten was induced to make an Investigation. He states that he has made an examination exam-ination of every individual case that came to his notice, not only conferring confer-ring with the patient but with the attending at-tending physician, and that In no instance in-stance has he found tho rumors to be well founded. i nave made a careful Investigation," Investiga-tion," said Mr. Shorten this morning, "and It is my opinion there is no foundation for the report that infection infec-tion cohies from the Utah Hot Springs. I hae talked with a number of the physicians of the city who, it was claimed, had treated such cases and they told me that it was a false report, that they knew of no cases traceable to the Hot Springs. It can also be said that the health department depart-ment has it from the best medical authority that the mineral water of the springs is germ-proof. Cases were reported to be In the hospital and I made a visit to that Institution, and found that there were no such cases." It was reported this morning that the springs had been quarantined because be-cause of disease, but Dr. R. S. Joyce, president of the company which owns the resort, said he knew nothing to that effect, and thought he would be the first to be Informed. "The question of infection from tho springs is too sloppy to talk about," the doctor said. "Does any one think our company would be spending $10,-000 $10,-000 for additional Improvements and making the place what It Is designed to be, If we had water there filled with bacteria. I have heard all kinds of rumors the past number of days but have paid no attention to them. You can hear most anything about hot springs." It was rumored that Dr. William G. Freiday had recently treated about 40 cases of ear and eye trouble that had been traced to the hot springs. Tho Doctor was briefly interviewed this morning, and said; i r'1 ave ,had a sreat many cases of ufectlon the past few weeks, most of inCnm er ,nf0JctIon. b"t It was not due to the springs water. The Infec- :tlons were all individual and were simply aggravated by bathing and the aggravation would have been as great In tho purest of water. The afflictions had no connection whatevor with the hot springs, but, that being tho most convenient bathing place, most of the caseB that came to my notice had been aggravated at the springs. It was not chargeable to the hot springs water." It has alBO been Bald that the pools havo not been properly cleansed, and that bathing suits are not properly washed, parties claiming that bathing suits had simply been dried out after use and returned as a clean garment. Some went so far as to say that dead babies had been found in some of the pools, and that all kinds of disease was lurking in accumulations In and around the pools. Manager Dan Ensign states that such talk is libelous, as ho has taken especial pains to keep tho hot springs premises clean and froo from any sort of contamination over since he took tho management of the place. He maintains that tho bathing suits and towels always have been properly laundered. Ho sayB that he has tried to find the sourco of some of the rumors rum-ors but has not succeeded. It is his opinion that the complaints have started start-ed from somo one who has a grudge Dr. Rich, In speaking of tho rumor today, stated that ho considered It wrong for such talk to spread around the town as there Is no foundation for the statements. "I have had a -few ear cases recently recent-ly but the Infection did not come from the hot springs water. I think the rumor ought to be stopped, for It Is getting to bo something awful. Of course the people handling tho springs should see to It that the bathing bath-ing suits and towels are well boiled before thoy are used and If they do that, nothing more can be expected. I don't know of anything wrong with the water " This afternoon Dr. J. Dwlght Harding Hard-ing stated that many of his patients had recently asked him whether the hot springs water was not creating an Infection In their ears, and he had explained to them that diving and plunging in water of any description would often aggravate an infection of the ear and cause trouble. "Tho trouble Is," the doctor continued, con-tinued, "it is not everybody who dives who understands how to remove tho water from tho ears without causing unfavorable results. They don't seem to know how to remove tho water from the ears after diving. The hot springs waters Is not Infecting Infect-ing ears, it is simply aggravating the Infection in some instances. I think some patients have misunderstood the situation, and it is also possible that some one who does not like the hot springs management as talking a little lit-tle too freely It is a good bathing place and it should be patronized.' oo |
