Show PACERS MAKE BIG SHOWING Thirty-three New Records Established by Fleet-footed Racers in 1914 Season. Pacers held sway during the past racing season, indulging in more record rec-ord breaking feats than ever before m the history of the side-wheeling brigade. n0 less than thirty-three new records were established by these neel things which is a bigger show lng than made by the trotters, horses of that gait lowering thirteen championship champi-onship marks. No horse appeared during the year nnd displayed as much class as' did Directum I. Naturally this will be disputed by the trotting horse folks who will still hold up the wonderful Peter Yolo as their standard bearer. Peter Volo iR a marvel, perhaps the best entire horse ever seen among the trotters. He has done something beyond all the rest and with good luck he will become a champion. However How-ever Dire, mm I was the brilliant per former and to this superl) little chestnut chest-nut stallion should be awarded the orown for greatness on the race tra ck Directum I proved that he is perhaps per-haps the gamest horse we have known His first appearance was when he was not quite ready for a five. heat affair and everybody was taUlnc B crack at him In some parts of the miles lie won two fast heats and then succumbed to Flower Direct, a mnre that, is not In his cbss, for she never could come back and repeat hT performance Directum Makes Best Mile. But Directum I came back, he beat the best horses that were opposed to him and raced In 1 58 without help. Which is the best mile on record. The (rotters do not have to be ashamed of the records they made during the year. On the contrary they broke some records which were worth while. The greateat single performance was the lowering of the record for threc- ear-olds to 2:02 1-2 by the unbeaten un-beaten Peter Volo. a remarkable colt because he has been doing championship champi-onship stunts from his yearling form when his mile 2 19 showed that he was up to beating tfrf 2 15 3-4 of Alrdale if he had been set down for that When his two-year-old mark In 2.04 1-2 was a sensation, and this set son he took a second from it. Had the Lexington meeting run another week and the conditions been suitable suit-able It Is likely that he would have trotted the fastest mile of the year. Btawah lowered more records than nny of them. Ho put the mark for four-year-olds .down to 2 .03 1-4, and lowered the race record for three heats. He won tho fastest four-heat race nnd shares with Tommy Horn the record for the fastest fourth heat |
