Show BOOTH REMOVED ASU.S. ATTORNEY President Wilson Takes Summary Sum-mary Action Against Utah Official. Salt Lake, Dec. 20. Hiram K. Booth, United States district attorney li r Utah, was yesterday removed from office on the order ot President A'ood- I row Wilson. The order was rccelv d by Mr. Booth yesterday afternoon I and was operative at the close of I business yesterday The removal of the district attorney followed his re-1 cent refusal to resign at the request of the attorney general W. W Ray, who several days aft- received the recommendation of the department of justice, will be nominated nomi-nated by President Wilson to mi- 1 coed Mr Booth and, pending his nomination nom-ination and confirmation by the senate, sen-ate, the position may be filled in one of two ways Either his successor can be temporarily named by an appointment ap-pointment made by United State Judge John A. Marshall, or William j M. McCrca, who has been Mr Booth's 1 assistant will continue to act In the, capacity of district attorney until that office Is regularly filled. The United StateB district attorney is appointed lor a term of four years and can only be removed on the older ol-der of the president. Mr Booth j took his oath of office on July 5, 1900. j and his second term, therefore, will not expire until July ",, 1914. Current reports for several weeivs in Salt Lake City have Indicated that Senators Heed Smoot and George ' Sutherland would pul every possible stumbling block in the v.ny ot ;ui ap polntment of a successor to Mr. Booth ' That such action may not be taken j by ihe Utah senators was indicated last night in a telegram which Mr j Booth Btuit to Senators Smoot and Sutherland ami in which be said that It was his desire and request that .Mr Ray's appointment be confirmed as quickly as possible The telegram to Senators Smoot and Sutherland in full follows: "I retire from office as United States attorney at close of business today, and am informed that W. W. Ray has been appointed as my auc-ces?or auc-ces?or and that his name has been sent to the senate for confirmation It is my desire and I hereby request 1 that Mr. Ray s appointment be con firmed as quickly as possible (Signed).
